Helping Pork Producers in Amish Communities

MSU Extension partnered with the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) to provide an educational workshop for pork producers in Amish communities that are considering constructing new barns for contract pork production. This educational program was developed based on numerous farm visits, phone calls and general interest from prospective pork producers within these communities.

Members, MSU Extension educators, MSU scientists and MDA personnel covered numerous topics including barn site selection, the Michigan odor print, agency contacts, soil sampling, nutrient management and mortality composting—all of which are pertinent components for completing Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Production Facility Siting Request Application for new and expanding livestock production facilities.
